Krystal Birdsong's Writings 13

June 30th, 2009 by Leonard Birdsong

Birdsong’s daughter Krystal was a very good writer.  After her death in September 2008, we found her journals where she posted writings of her thoughts, songs she wrote, musings, and drafts of articles she wrote for the Barry University  newspaper.  Here is part of one  the articles she  wrote for the newspaper in October 2005.

The Circumcision Debate

Many students here at Barry are of the age when thoughts of the future begin to creep in.  Beginning potential careers, buying new cars/houses, starting a family, and possibly having children begin to figure into these plans.

For those of you considering having  children, have you decided whether or not to get your future sons circumcised?  the issue might  have never popped into your mind, but this is a huge question that has sparked much debate within families as well as the world of social science today.

in the 1960′s the rate of male circumcision in the U.S. was about 95%.  Today it is around 60%  What has sparked this dramatic decrease?  paradigm shifts

The Homily for Krystal Birdsong

May 29th, 2009 by Leonard Birdsong

Our beloved daughter, Krystal, passed away on October 20, 2008.  She had graduated from Barry University in May of 2008, with her B.A. degree in Sociology.  On Thursday, October 2, 2008, the University held a Memorial Mass for Krystal at the Cor Jesu Chapel on the Barry campus in Miami Shores, Florida.  The President of the University, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, O.P. presided at the mass.  The campus priest, Father Scott O’Brien, O.P. wrote and delivered the very beautiful homily for Krystal.  Birdsong thought that some of you might like to read it.

                                                Homily for Krystal Birdsong

Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You have faith in god, have faith also in me.  In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places; if there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?

Words of great consolation from the Gospel of John, particularly so at a time like this – the death of a daughter, a friend, a fellow student and peer, an advocate for peace and justice.

Words of the Lord Jesus that fill us with a sure and certain gratitude to our God who is not a God of the dead

Krystal Birdsong passed away in September 2008.  In honor of her memory Birdsong continues to post some of her writings on this blog.  Krystal had a great imagination and was an excellent writer.  Here is one about a dream she had  just before  her high school graduation. I wonder what it really means?

DREAM –  MAY 8, 2000

Lionnell and I (along w/some others) went for a drive in my mom’s car.  Lionnell drove. We got to the place (sort of like Montgomery Village shopping center) and got out & met up with a bunch of other people.  Pat (from Malcontent) showed up & was blabbering, then I patted his stomach.  Then Brad Petit shows up & suggests driving to New York cause it’s on the way home.

It was 11 o’clock@ night — I said we had to be home since my mom

Birdsong and his family still grieve the loss of our youngest daughter Krystal who passed away on September 20, 2008.  We have been going through her  effects, including her writings.  When Krystal graduated from high school she still lived in the Washington, D.C. area only joining us in Florida later.  We have found a couple of pieces in one of her “journals” that seem to describe a religious seminar she attended around the time of her high school graduation.  I certainly had never heard about it.  Perhaps, she made it up?

So we’re at Creation!  we’re all so BLESSED!  Last night was great — the drive was beautiful — only about 2 hours to PA. Neato!

Everyone here is sooo nice and filled to the brim with God’s Spirit.  Just like me.  I can totally feel the Spirit in me and everyone else!

Krystal Birdsong's Writings 6

Birdsong plans to continue showcasing his late daughter Krystal’s poems and musings on this blog.  Krystal graduated from Barry University in May of 2008.  She passed away in September of 2008.  Her passing broke all of our hearts.   Krystal always kept a journal but never showed her writings to her family.  This week birdsong presents two untitled pieces we found recently  while going through one of her journals.  Enjoy.

UNTITLED 1

Loving to hate, but living to die.

Every morning I hear them calling.

Taking the breath and substance within.

Night and day I feel them breaking.

UNTITLED 2

She slowly waves her soft, silken robe across the sky putting the world to sleep.
